Strings and things

Good morning to you! Oh happy day! Birds are singing, yes, birds are doing their thing, what ever that is and I am getting a new monitor, TODAY!!! Oh YEAH! I know today that I will be running to the door like my pug Jenny running to the kitchen when she hears the familiar sound of the bag of Pepperoni’s opening. I have needed a new monitor since I bought this computer. I knew that this was an issue after I shot that wedding this past September. I had pictures printed a few times and the colors on my screen definitely did not match what was coming from the different places that I was using for printing and I had never had that many issues. Anyhow, I hate to ask for help so I have been patiently waiting to purchase a new one and trying different ways to edit, all with their own idiosyncrasies. I would clean up the noise, do spot removal or cropping on my computer and then fix color on my phone. That is just no way to do anything. Now, I no longer have to lie about it and cover up for my lack of equipment. I know I could have started a Go-Fund me or borrowed the money but I just couldn’t. Thank you (and jeeepers argh!!!!) Dad for passing down the stubborn genetics. I am sorry to anyone this affected.

Anyhow, so if any good came out of this pandemic crisis, then this was my one saving grace. Thank you, gracias, arigato! I am truly am sorry that I could not be truthful in not saying why I couldn’t finish as it caused great anxiety. Also, I ordered a new external hard drive, so I can clear out my hard drive. So two small purchases that will help greatly. Anyhow, I can’t wait and I am giddy with excitement that I can finish, actually, I will have to go through the originals again and edit with the new screen and print again. It’s not like I have anything to do, right? Fingers crossed and I did throw a little salt over my shoulder, you know for luck.

Yesterday, it was cool to talk about Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and Leon Trotsky with another WP reader from Indonesia. He and I trade messages frequently. I get to learn about his musical tastes and such and he get’s to learn about mine. It is like this cool cultural exchange between a Gen-X and a Millennial. He just learned about Spinal Tap and Frida yesterday. His posts have taken me on buses and down market streets in Asian communities that I have been wanting to travel to experience the food and culture. I get to hear about what it is like in his part of the world for him and his significant other. It is pretty cool. I have said this before, it is like traveling without leaving your home. He introduced me to the entrancing sound of Khruangbin and I now I can’t get enough of their exotic sound. I felt like a proud Grama when he mentioned that one of the bands that I told him to listen to now has a new fan, him. The best I tell ya!

Also, I, well, we, hubby and I, have another project. Oh yeah, Hubby had an old, guitar body hanging out in the garage for as long as I could remember. Anyhow, he said that if I would like to restore it, then I could. You know me, my eyes glazed over and drool hung from my bottom lip as I daydreamed about fixing it. So, we both went on Google and started looking up info. It is an Epiphone electric guitar.

I lightly dusted this before photographing. I want to be sure to get the proper cleaning agent.

The Model number is 278594

So, I took the opportunity to see if my creative photo block had been lifted as really, I have been shooting lately but forcing myself to be creative and not letting it happen naturally. Right now, it just starting to feel better for me, like a breath of fresh desert air.

The only other information I have on this guitar is that Hubby bought it at Venice Beach in the late 80’s for around 30 bucks. He said it played and then by the looks of it, became a project and was never put back together. Anyhow, I am looking for the name of this vintage Epiphone Electric Guitar. The head-stock indicates that the serial number is 278594. I have Googled till my eyes almost googled out of my head and found out lots of cool things about Epiphones and Gibsons, but nothing about this one. I would love an original picture of it. If not, I am looking for parts that may work for this guitar and best stuff to use. I have read reviews on a few websites but would like some more perspective on the restoration process since this will be my first time. Restoration virgin, huh huh huh… This will help fill in some of the wholes in my Jerry-rigged education of everything. So to any brave souls that are willing to help and answer questions, thank you in advance.

Thank you for stopping by for a visit and hope to see you around these parts again. Be happy and happy will be with you! Hugs!

That is a single pickup Olympic Melody Maker, probably around 1967 (batwing headstock is 1964 and later). Here’s some info on it from http://www.guitarhq.com/epiphon2.html#oly:

    • Epiphone Olympic (1 pickup), Olympic Double (2 pickups), Olympic 3/4 (1 pickup, 3/4 scale) solidbody electrics.
    • Collectibility Rating: D-.
    • Combination tailpiece/bridge, dot fingerboard inlays, available one or two pickups and in 3/4 scale length version, thin black Melody Maker style pickups, sunburst finish.
    • Introduced 1960. Single cutaway (like Gibson’s Melody Maker), 3+3 tuner configuration.
    • 1963: Asymmetrical double cutaway body with upper bass horn slightly longer than treble horn, logo between pickups, goofy looking “cheap amp” style barrel knobs.
    • 1964: 3/4 scale length version discontinued, 6 on a side “batwing” peghead, Maestro vibrato optional.
    • 1965: vibrato standard.
    • 1966: cherry finish optoinal.
    • Discontinued 1970.

The pickguard would have been similar to this 1965 pickguard: http://www.pickguardplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/epi-olympic-1965-238×300.jpg

I want to see the photos of the guitar once you have it restored. I recognized the body style right away, but I wasn’t familiar with the batwing headstock. So I had to do a little research on that.

      2. Yeah we found others with similar bodies but it was that head stock that we couldn’t find. It has been in a garage in the Palm Springs area for the last 6 years in 120 + heat during the summer. Hope it is not too damaged. The looks good though and I don’t see much warpage.

As long as the neck can be adjusted to be fairly straight and playable, the rest of the guitar looks fine.

      4. Hubby is right behind me and saying that he will get it working again 🙂 HA ha.

    2. Now to locate the parts. I just refurbished an old amp (the outside) now I need to purchase the speakers. Sorry. Hopefully, I can find some parts. Even if I am not able to get it working at least I would like to get it to look like the original. Thanks for the picture, Big help!!!

It looks like the pickgaurds are available. You can probably find the singly coil pickups and volume and tone pots on ebay or other guitar parts places, but original parts might be difficult to find and expensive. But aftermarket pickups should be plentiful.

Also, since it’s not considered a collectible guitar, you can put what ever you like in it, really.

      3. True. I am probably going to mount it on the wall but if I could get it to work that would be a huge plus. Hubby would like to get it to play. He played it in a band in 92 or 94.

Once you get a pickguard and if you are not worried about restoring it to original specs, aftermarket pickup, pots, tailpiece and bridge will not cost much.

      5. I can have hubby restring it. He really would like to play it. Me not so much. I hate to say it, but I am after the aesthetics.

Aesthetics has a lot to do with how you feel about an instrument. Guitars make fine art pieces.

      7. They sure do. If I had a million dollars is the name of a song but really if I did, I would surely buy a few guitars I have had my eye on and I don’t even play.

    Howdy!

It looks like the guitar has some experience. I mean, your hubby played it between 92 and 94 while the world still had Cobain! (I was just a toddler back then.)

Anyway, congrats for the new monitor (can’t believe you put so much effort by doing a combined editing on computer and smartphone!) and I look forward to reading the posts about the restoration. 😀

    Have a wonderful day! 🙂

    1. Hey there!

The guitar was bought on a basketball court in Venice Beach. Hubby said the guy was trying to sell it to anybody that would take it. He said it worked and he used it.

The new monitor comes tomorrow. Yeah it really sucks. Every time I save up any money something or someone needs it. Photography is really just a hobby so I couldn’t see spending that money when I hadn’t been working. Anyhow, we got money from the government because of this pandemic. It was a gift!! Now i can finish the website and maybe go after clients now that I will be able to edit with more confidence. I know what I shoot when I shoot but people want certain, looks you can only get through editing. Can’t wait till tomorrow.
You have a great day. Hope you and Madam are doing well and staying safe.

The guitar sure had a story. I guess if the old owner treated the guitar well, it would be more conscious that it was more than a wood, but a musical instrument.

Wow, great! Can’t wait to see more of your photos. 🙂

Have a nice day too you and your hubby 🙂

      2. The guitar funny enough was bought from a guy off the street probably selling it for drugs. I really just want to get it to look close to the original condition even if we can’t get it to play. We passed by the area yesterday and Hubby pointed it out. It was funny. He also pointed out all the places that he used to hang out when he was a teenager.

I will get more photos up soon. I have been trying to get a gallery updated on the website and also a place to feature the “new” music that people suggest to me. Linking the two sites together has been rough. By the way, the new monitor is better than I could have imagined. I wish I would have bought one sooner.
        Be well and safe 🙂

Wow, I bet knowing the history makes you love the guitar even more. 🙂 Hahaha… Wow, the road trip was so nostagic, wasn’t it? Well, it suddenly makes me remember a song from Keane, Sovereign Light Cafe. 🙂

I’m really happy to hear about the new monitor. 😀 Your websites are going to be even more awesome.

You too, be well and safe. Have a wonderful day. 🙂

      4. OMG! I love Keane! They had a few good songs that I remember.

Yes, I love the new monitor. It’s funny, but my cameras and my eye were capturing it pretty close to what I wanted but the old screen made me turn everything greenish for some reason. Hopefully that will stop. 🙂

Their songs are pretty neat. I love them since I heard Everbody’s Changing for the first time.

Great! You don’t need to move the files from the computer to the cellphone and back to the computer anymore. 😀

      6. I liked their hit song Somewhere Only We Know. Loved it. I will have to play some Keane today, thanks for that!

Yeah, it is great not having to readjust the colors on my phone! Oh my, and me I am a professional photographer…ha ha too funny!!! That is what I was called one time as I was kicked out of a casino, a professional photographer…the nerve. I am unprofessional!!

Yeah.. It was featured on some movies, if I’m not mistaken. Some of their songs are pretty good to start the day. You’re most welcome 🙂

Hahaha… Quite an experience. You got the spirit of the war photographers 🙂

      8. Yeah I think it that may be where i first heard there music. (Keane). I usually refer to that as Sunday music, coffee drinking music. Something to listen to while I am drinking coffee and reading or something.

Never thought of it that way, I consider myself a “stalker”. I shoot from the shadows as to not get caught. I truly love candid shots and hate posed shots…

Be safe Fuji-san! Have a good sleep. I know it must be late. I was out at 4 AM taking pictures of the moon and the planets. They are very bright in the sky tonight. Not sure if you will get the same light show. Hope you do! 🙂

Couldn’t agree more. Their songs are so easy listening.

-or wildlife photographer, perhaps. 🙂 Candid photos are gonna be valuable in the future because they capture life as it is.

Cool…. Looking forward to see the photos on your upcpming posts. 🙂 Good evening from the other side of the globe. Stay safe 😀

  3. Hey! I have been up for almost 7 hours…I get insomnia and only sleep a few hours a night. Yeah, I like that type of music for when I am reading and relaxing. Yes, they are easy 🙂

Most of my shots are candid. The ones I am posting today are ones that I have been working on to add to m gallery. My first gallery project is water! Animals is a favorite of mine to shoot. As long as you have a quick lense and even quicker reflexes, animal shots are some of the funniest.

Sleep well is you are heading off to sleep. I think I am going to try and take a nap 🙂
